One of four partnership teams supported through the PRAXIS Project focused on UCC Planning’s longstanding connections with planning professionals in The Gambia. The team developed *Whose Sustainable Development?*, a pilot interactive StoryMap that uses spatial planning as an entry point into Global Citizenship Education.
Through interactive maps, historical comparisons, data and discussion questions, the resource explores rapid urbanisation, population change, land use, food security, climate vulnerability and the difficult choices involved in balancing economic development, social equity and environmental protection. It encourages learners to ask who benefits from development, who bears its costs, and how decisions about places might be made more equitably and sustainably.
The resource was prepared by Karen Ronayne and Brendan O’Sullivan of UCC Planning, with contributory material from Stephen Thornhill, background preparation by Grace O’Mahony, and support and encouragement from M.S. Jobe, Essa Camara and planning colleagues in Banjul. It forms part of an ongoing relationship intended to support further educational collaboration and student engagement.
