Introduction

The “Elephant in the Room” project is a creative, arts-based initiative designed to address racism and spark conversations within our university community. It was developed as part of the work of the Praxis Project at University College Cork, led by Dr Gertrude Cotter, a lecturer with the School of Education. The project brought together staff and students to engage with the often unspoken, yet ever-present, realities of racism on campus.

Contributors included: UCC Staff: Carol Condon, Eoin Fray, Gertrude Cotter, Sanaa Khabaar, Martha Phelan, Richard Keyes-McDonnell. UCC Students: Ellen Pereira, María Torres, Siwar Adhibi, Ying Chen. Artist & Facilitator: Tom Campbell. Document & website layout, design and edit: Dr Rene Gonzales.

The project began with a series of anti-racism training sessions for staff and students, offering foundational knowledge and tools to understand and address racism in higher education. These trainings formed the bedrock for the “Elephant in the Room” project, where creative expression and critical dialogue intersected.

On this website you will find a summary version of the resource and ideas and suggestions which align with the Elephant in the Room concept.
